We currently have for sale the 90th production “pre-A” Speedster (VIN 80090), 1 of only 200 produced in 1954 and only 1700 “pre-A” Speedsters produced in total. This particular car has been meticulously restored by Vintage Specialties and was refinished in its factory original color, Glassomax Pure White with red leatherette interior. Per the Kardex, it has a production date of November 15, 1954 and was imported to New York by Max Hoffman. The only option listed on the Kardex is “Tacho in Meilen” (tachometer in miles). It is matching numbers and will come with the Kardex and COA.
Manuel Wilkinson, the owner of Vintage Specialties and a private collector originally found the car in June 2017 just north of Los Angeles. It was literally under a cover in a barn where it had sat for nearly 30 years. It is believed the family who owned it had bought it from the original owners sometime in the mid-1980s. The dry Southern California climate helped preserve the original paint and slow down the impending rust. What makes this car so spectacular is the unmolested body and originality (the car even has the original steering wheel and five-date matched wheels). It was never in an accident nor had it ever been restored before…a true survivor as it was found.
Vintage Specialties is a private restoration company that only restores its own cars. Throughout the years they have come to be known for some very special restorations and as fellow craftsmen, we can speak to the quality and thoughtfulness that went into this project. The restoration itself started in the Fall of 2018 and took a year and a half to complete. The car was disassembled and all the original parts were saved, reconditioned, and reused. Many rare early “pre-a” parts were meticulously restored including; the original bumper moldings, the original “blunt nose” hood handle, original factory stamped windshield, original banjo steering wheel (included with purchase but not installed), original “pre A” light switch, key ignition and starter button, original door handles, original enamel Reutter badge, original Solex carburetors, and matching date stamped 16” wheels. This car is completely matching numbers; engine and transmission, doors, hood and trunk (all stamped) as well as the glass.
The Glassomax Pure White paint was done in-house at their state of the art painting facility and looks spectacular coupled with the red leatherette interior. All the chrome has been triple-plated. The seats and interior were redone by Autos International and the gauges were restored by Palo Alto Speedometer. The engine and transmission were rebuilt in house using genuine Porsche parts, correct hardware, and proper finishes. Keeping with originality, the original 6v electrical system remains in place and functional along with a rebuilt wiring harness.
This is a special opportunity to own a piece of early Porsche history. The car comes with COA, Kardex and a spare 16” date stamped wheel along with lots of process pictures from before/during/after the restoration.
