1962 Porsche 356 Cab

*After speaking with the original owner and referencing letters/documentation written to Porsche, the owner confirmed the odometer broke at 6,003 miles in 1963. He sent it to VDO, it was repaired and zero’d out. Since then, an additional 15,883 miles were added and the car has a documented total of 21,886 original miles.

Currently for sale, we have a 1962 Porsche 356B 1600S Cab with factory hardtop finished in Bali Blue with grey leather interior. The first owner, Wim vd Horst, ordered this car as a Tourist Delivery on May 23, 1962. He also purchased and picked up a 1962 VW Bug Sunroof Coupe which he had delivered to Holland. He and his brother planned a month-long Euro trip where they could pick both cars up and enjoy driving them around Europe. To start, they flew into Holland where they picked up the VW Bug and drove to Monaco and then to Stuttgart to pick up his Porsche. After receiving the Porsche and touring the factory, they drove to the Nurburgring to watch the 1000km race. He and his brother enjoyed driving around Europe for the month before having both cars shipped back to the United States and later delivered to his home in Flint, Michigan. Per the COA/Kardex the car has the following options; 2 Headrests, Chrome Wheels, 2 Pair of Seat Belts, Radio Becker “Europa”, Antenna, 2 Loudspeakers, Chrome Signal Ring. The car was also optioned with a factory hardtop finished in Silbermetall (a $220.00 option).

Mr. vd Horst enjoyed the car for 2 years and drove it to many club events in Michigan as the Regional Executive of the SCCA. Then in August 1964, someone turned in front of him and he damaged the driver-side headlight and bumper. He parked the 356 in his garage until he could find a trusted body shop to repair the vehicle. Soon after parking his 356 he became a Porsche dealer and started driving 911s. After his Porsche dealership, he took on a Toyota franchise and started driving Toyota’s, and the 356 was partially forgotten. Before long it was 1985, Mr. vd Horst closed up shop and moved his family to California where they bought a small ranch in Santa Rosa. By then, he had grown his collection of Porsches which now included a ’56 356 Coupe. After years of being a Porsche dealer, Mr. vd Horst developed a close relationship with Stoddard Porsche in Willoughby, Ohio where he sent the car to be repaired. He had the front end-repaired, painted the entire car (it had been sitting in his barn), and had them install a new canvas top. He then enjoyed the car for many years and at the age of 89 and after 56 years of ownership, Mr. vd Horst decided to sell the car to its second owner in 2018 who we then bought it from in 2021.

Having only one owner the majority of its life, the car is extremely original and a great representation of what a well-maintained 62’ Cab with just the right amount of patina should look like. The car is extremely complete, a testament to its previous owners. The interior is all original, it even has the original factory-installed carpet and original glass (including the windshield). It has all 5 date stamped wheels and the spare is even wrapped in its original Michelin tire. It also has all the original paperwork, including; Tourist Delivery correspondence with Porsche factory, original spec sheet, original Porsche price list, original directions manual for removing/installing the hard/soft tops (in German), original service book (which was partially filled out), original owners manual, tonneau cover, matching spare, and a thick binder filled with service receipts from the past 59 years.

Mechanically, the car has been serviced religiously over the years when it was on the road by two fastidious owners who drove it regularly. The second owner, an active 356 Registry member, and avid Porsche collector purchased the car in 2018 and mechanically brought it to the next level, utilizing his Porsche network of specialists from around the country, including Competition Engineering and Willhoit Auto Restoration. He went through the entire car, in order to preserve the originality of the car, he only cleaned and replaced items when absolutely necessary. He addressed the following; rebuilt the engine, rebuilt the brake system, installed a refurbished Becker Europa radio, resealed the transmission, replaced all fuel hoses, replaced the fuel sender, replaced the oil cooler, installed 4 new Michelin XZX tires, etc. He even had one last oil change performed before shipping it from his home in Florida to our shop in Costa Mesa, California. Mechanically the car is in perfect condition and can be enjoyed immediately. The car was repainted many years ago and shows some wear, predominately rock chips are visible on the nose of the car and there was a paint correction done on the driver side door. The interior is in great original condition with a nice patina. This would be an excellent driver to use for your local cars and coffee on the weekends or could even be considered a winner in the survivor class of your local Concours. It’s not often you come across a car with such a well-documented history and back-to-back fanatic owners. The car comes with both the original hardtop and soft top with additional interior side panels for when the soft top is in use. Also included, extensive service history, matching spare, Kardex, and COA.
